SIOP
In Shoreline, we have several SIOP trained content area
teachers, particularly in science and social studies. At each
of our two high schools, we have 'SIOP' classes (e.g., SIOP
Biology, SIOP US History, etc.). The departments for these
classes have determined that the same content as regular ed classes
is covered, so these classes generate content area credit and they
do not read as 'ELL' classes on students' transcripts.
Currently, these classes only contain ELL students, as the teachers
deliver the content using SIOP-based strategies that support
language development along with content learning. My question
is: Should we consider including 'struggling learners' in these
classes, who are not ELL students? I see positives and
negatives on both sides, but welcome the input of others in the
field.
Thanks,
Ellen Kaje, Manager of ELL in Shoreline
